A Mission of Hope: Changing Lives in the Fight Against Cervical Cancer with Mythri Sewa Samsthe
In 2003, Mythri Seva Samsthe (MSS) started with a simple dream—to help the women in Bellary District, Karnataka, and in the nearby areas to a lead better and healthier lives. What began as a small effort to support the women through education on hygiene and socio-economic upliftment has now grown into a strong movement that has changed the lives of many individuals. Over the years, MSS has worked tirelessly to help women overcome their challenges and lead a more empowered life.
In 2024, our mission took a more urgent turn. While working with the community, we discovered a shocking truth that Cervical cancer, a deadly yet preventable disease was spreading quickly in the region. Many of the women we helped were at risk and were unaware of the dangers around them. the lack of awareness, and poor hygiene, and limited access to healthcare made these women vulnerable. This was a urgent call for us, and we knew that immediate action was needed for this.
The Reality of Cervical Cancer
Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among the women in India, with over 120,000 new cases every year. Nearly 67,000 women die from this disease annually. In places like Bellary, this problem was very high. The numbers are not just statistics—they represent lost lives, sufferings of the families, and the pain of the community.
With this information, MSS expanded its mission to focus on fighting cervical cancer through educating, spreading awareness, and screening. Our core belief is very simple: awareness can help to prevent this disease.
Our Efforts and Impact
We began by organizing community programs to educate women about cervical cancer. At first, many women had never heard of the disease. They didn’t know what the symptoms or the risk factors were, and they didn’t know that this could be prevented. But with every session, we saw the women become more informed, empowered, and determined to protect their health.
So far, we have reached over 750 women and 350 adolescent girls, including college students. These sessions don’t just provide information—they empower women to share this knowledge within their families and communities, creating a ripple effect of awareness.
The Power of Early Detection
To take our efforts further, we launched a cervical cancer screening program. And the results were very shocking. Out of 15 women that were screened, 9 were tested positive with early signs of cervical cancer. Early detection of the disease gave these women a chance to fight against the disease. This highlights the urgent need for accessible screening programs in Bellary.
Empowering the Next Generation
MSS has also focused on educating adolescent girls about the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), the leading cause of cervical cancer. However, many families could not afford the HPV screenings or vaccinations. And hence by offering affordable vaccination programs, we are helping these girls take care of their health. This knowledge that we impart will stay with them and benefit their families and the communities in future.
Overcoming Challenges
Our journey was not easy. The stigma surrounding cervical cancer, combined with financial conditions of the family, often prevents women from seeking help. But through regular education, communication, and dedication, we are able to break down these walls. Every awareness session, every screening, and every conversation brings us to a healthier community.
Our Plan for the Future
Looking ahead, MSS is aims to expanding our efforts. Our strategic plan includes:
Expanding the Screening Programs: We aim to set up mobile screening units that will help in reaching the remote areas and hold regular camps with healthcare partners.
Advocating for Vaccination: We will work with governments and private organizations to provide affordable or free HPV vaccines.
Community Mobilization: Training health workers and volunteers to spread awareness and encourage screenings and vaccinations.
Strengthening Partnerships: We will collaborate with educational institutions, local businesses, and donors to increase our impact.
Providing Support: Offering emotional and nutritional help to women diagnosed with cervical cancer, ensuring they feel supported throughout their journey.
The Call for Support
The impact of our work is clear in the lives we’ve changed. But there is still much to be done. Cervical cancer can be prevented, but many women are lacking the knowledge, the resources, and access to healthcare they need.
A Vision of Hope
What began as a journey of empowerment has evolved into a fight for survival and dignity. It is about ensuring that no woman or girl in our community succumbs to a preventable disease. With your partnership, we can turn this vision into reality.
Let’s make a difference, together.
